Why a small address mistake can create a big shipping problem
When a package is delayed or headed somewhere it shouldn’t be, it’s easy to assume something went wrong in transit. Sometimes that’s true. But other times, the issue started much earlier — at checkout.
A customer, moving quickly, skips an apartment number, mistypes the zip code or accepts autofill without noticing that something is slightly off. The order still goes through, but once the shipping label is created and the shipment is in motion, the issue rarely stays a small problem.
A shipping carrier may flag it for correction, delay the package, reroute it or return it altogether. What seemed like a minor error at checkout can quickly become a chain of avoidable costs and interruptions.

Small errors carry outsized consequences
Many checkout experiences still leave a lot of room for preventable errors. Baymard Institute found that 47% of ecommerce sites don’t provide address validation at checkout, and 55% don’t offer fully automatic address lookup. That means accuracy often depends on how carefully a customer enters their information and how closely it’s reviewed before fulfillment.
Unfortunately, when a shipping address is off, the shipment often doesn’t pause. Instead, the issue compounds. What was initially a small input error can quickly turn into added shipping time, extra work for the business and more uncertainty for the customer than the order should have carried in the first place.
And the cost shows up quickly. UPS and FedEx now list address correction fees at more than $25 per package. This may seem high, but the real cost is higher than the fee.
Corrections can extend transit time, trigger customer questions and sometimes lead to a full reshipment. Customers only see whether their order arrived when it was supposed to, and this creates additional friction your shipping team has to manage.
That’s why something as simple as address accuracy can end up carrying more weight than it seems.

Catch the problem while it’s still small
It’s natural to focus on what happens once a package leaves your hands. After all, that’s where shipping feels most out of your control. But don’t underestimate the issues that start closer to home.
Fortunately, address validation is one of the most preventable shipping problems you’ll face. Clearer address fields, better validation, address lookup tools and a quick review of flagged orders before fulfillment can all help reduce avoidable shipping issues. You can’t prevent all problems, but you can catch most of these mistakes while they’re still small and before they turn into delays, added fees and customer frustration.
Once a package is moving through a carrier network, your options narrow. The best chance to avoid the problem is usually at the very beginning, when the order is still in your hands and a small address correction is still easy to make.
Ultimately, the more attention you give that early part of the process, the fewer problems you’ll have to solve later.
