High temps, high stakes: A smarter approach to summer shipping

June 10, 2025

Summer shipping

Summer is great for many reasons — long weekends, lighter inboxes and lingering sunshine. It’s also the season of summer sales, staff vacations and stretched operations.

The pace might feel a bit more relaxed, but risks don’t always follow suit. From heat-sensitive goods to supply chain slowdowns, summer brings its own set of challenges. It’s peak season stress, just in shorts.

So, before the next wave of shipments goes out the door, it’s worth asking: are your packages prepared for what summer throws their way?

Why summer shipping goes sideways

There’s no single cause. It’s more like a chain reaction.

Seasonal sales kick in. Staff members take time off. Shipments go out with fewer hands and less oversight. At the same time, more customers may be away during the day, leaving boxes to bake in the sun or disappear from the porch.

And then there’s the heat. Products that ship out reliably most of the year — like auto parts, electronics, medical devices or anything sensitive to temperature swings — can overheat, warp or malfunction after hours in a hot truck. Heat-related damage isn’t always visible right away, either. But when customer complaints roll in, the cost becomes clear.

Returns only add to the strain. The more orders go out, the more might boomerang back — often in battered boxes with barely a buffer inside. That makes return transit risky, especially for high-value goods.

All told, summer might not look risky on paper, but the sunburn sneaks up fast.

When insurance gaps leave you sweating

It’s not just the weather turning up the heat. Summer also exposes how much (or how little) your shipments are actually protected.

Many business owners assume they’re covered, until a claim gets denied, a customer wants a refund and the cost of reshipping hits home. Most carriers include a default liability limit, but that only goes so far. And it rarely applies to two of summer’s biggest risks: porch theft or heat damage.

Even if you declare a higher value, it’s not the same as having true insurance. Declared value coverage is capped, conditional and puts the burden of proof on you. If the box is gone and the damage is undocumented, you’re stuck with the bill.

That makes summer losses especially murky. Was the product faulty? Was it packed improperly? Did the heat cause the problem, or just make it worse? That ambiguity can derail your claims and leave your customers frustrated.

Meanwhile, the clock is ticking to replace the item, issue a refund or offer something to preserve goodwill.

Smarter summer shipping starts here

Summer may be slower in some ways, but your shipping strategy shouldn’t be. A few smart adjustments can go a long way in protecting your shipments.

Here’s what smart shippers do when the temperature climbs:

  • Audit your product list for items that are heat-sensitive, theft-prone or expensive to replace.
  • Use the right packaging. Protective insulation, sturdy boxes and proper labeling (like “Keep Cool” or “Do Not Leave in Direct Sun” can help reduce damage.
  • Monitor the weather forecast. If a heatwave or storm is on the horizon, consider delaying shipments, upgrading to a faster service or letting customers know what to expect.
  • Improve delivery communication. Let customers know when to expect deliveries so packages don’t sit outside unnecessarily.
  • Update your coverage. If you’re only relying  on the carrier’s liability, consider third-party parcel insurance to fill the gaps and protect the full value of your shipments.
  • Use secure delivery options when possible. Lockers or business addresses can make a big difference.
  • Include clear return instructions or materials to prevent poorly packed reverse shipments.

Don’t let summer shipping melt your margins

Summer might be the season of slowing down, but shipping issues don’t take time off. Between heatwaves, staffing gaps and elevated return volumes, it only takes on misstep to turn a routine delivery into a costly problem.

Instead of sweating it out, build in the right protections and get the right coverage so your shipments stay safe and your customers cool — even when the weather isn’t.
